Second only to the face. I feel compelled by people’s hands. You can tell so much from them by the way people use their hands, what they use them for, and how they look (I think that Alfred Steglitz must have thought so to, judging by his "portrait" of Georgia O’Keeffe’s lovely digits.) So when I recently visited the National Gallery and saw (among other things) the wonderful "Fifteen Pairs of Hands" by the artist Bruce Newman. I was in awe with their intensity. I felt they were as intimate as a nude or a closely and lovingly rendered face. Yet I feel that so much of the time that hands don't get their due. They are the work horse of our bodies, they never rest and in the process we forget to acknowledge their grace, and beauty. Hands climb, wipe, make, do, wash, dry, clean, cook, help, scratch, caress, pet, love, and feel. SO, here's to hands!
