The ONLY show heretofore I've been a fan of on SiFi (now SyFy for some mysterious and unknown reason, but quite possibly for that VERY reason) is Ghost Hunters and it's franchise shows. So here I am sheepishly admitting to liking their new original? series "Being Human". I say sheepishly for several reasons; one of them being that I refuse to buy into the vampire mania that is The Twilight Trilogies, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. Which has culminated in the coining of the term "fang bang".
Just to clarify. I was the original lover of vampires back in my high school days as my BFF can attest. We were the outsiders, the anti-click click. So can someone explain to me how 15 years later vampires became what the "cool" kids are doing?! Needless to say I feel a little off-put but, I am moving on and I feel that phase of my life is best left where it began. In the past.
BUT(ah, you knew that was coming) I find myself completely intrigued by this show about a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost that befriend and support one another while they pose as humans in the midst of "normal" society. Surprisingly, they have chosen to highlight themes which are distinctively modern, relevant and gritty. Sally's character is a victim of domestic abuse and looking for revenge. Josh has a younger lesbian sister and in spite of that fact STILL manages to be the black sheep (or in this case wolf) of the family. Adian is a man conflicted and struggling to be a good person in-spite of his predilection for delicate blood.
Like all of us they are part good and part bad. Constantly wrestling with doing the right thing in a world that is increasingly indifferent to right and wrong. The only thing that gets in the way for them (and us) is that thing called a conscience.
The heart of this show is definitely Josh. He won me over immediately, funny and vulnerable he is the true voice of reason in this show. I also must give a special nod to the set design and visual direction of the show. I want to live in that old haunted house!
